This FAQ applies to the VIP410 model only. It does not apply to the VIP45 or VIP400 products.
The VIP410 provides and External Trip input which can be used to trigger the Trip Output of the relay if the input is energized with a 24-Volt DC voltage source with at least 3mA of current.
The External Trip works if the VIP410 is supplied with external auxiliary power. If the auxiliary power is lost or is not present, the External Trip input can still be used. However, there is a miniumu level of current which must be flowing through the Phase Current Sensors (CT's) in order for the VIP410 to have enough power.
These minimum current levels required to use the External Trip input are given in the chapter "Self-Powered Supply Starting Characteristics (VIP410)" of the VIP410 reference.
