Can Overcurremt and Ground Fault Relays be used with HVL and HVL/cc switches?

Issue:
Should the Overcurrent and Ground Fault Relays be used with HVL and HVL/cc switches?

Product Line:
HVL.

Environment:
Products sold in the United States.

Cause:
Application.

Resolution:
Overcurremt and Ground Fault Relays generally should not be used with HVL and HVL/cc switches. Switches are not designed to open short circuit or ground fault currents. A switch must only interrupt its continuous current. Fuses should be used for the overcurrent device with switches. The exceptions are when the overcurrent relays are used for overload currents and ground fault currents are limited to 400A or less by a grounding resistor.

It is OK to use there relays with Visi/Vac Circuit Interrupters and Masterclad breakers.
