Goals and Symptoms

How to convert a video file to .vmg or .mp4 format for Magelis XBTGT?

Causes and Fixes

*.vmg and *.mp4 are the only video formats that can be played on XBTGT4340/5340/6340/7340.
Our preferred format is .MP4.

>>> For .MP4 format conversion:
There are a number of commercial and open-source tools that you can use to convert other video formats to mp4. However, the XBTGT does not support every mp4 format, so some caution is required.

A useful tool for converting videos to be played on a XBTGT is Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr) which is currently in version 0.9.5 at the time of this writing. It is able to convert many common formats to the appropriate MP4 encoding. (See attached screenshot for suggested settings:handbrakeSettings.zip)

Please note that the resolution of the converted video should be no larger than 320x240. XBTGT does not support higher resolutions. Also, please ensure that a standard framerate is selected (You may choose from the dropdown menu in Handbrake).

>>> For .VMG format conversion:

To convert to .vmg, you need to use the AVI2VMG tool (internal usage of Schneider/Modicon tool) . This utility is available from Schneider support L3 team, but not to end customers since it is unsupported, as it is not a Schneider commercialized tool.

Also, the tool has difficulty converting some video formats. The main advantage of using .vmg over mp4 is that it provides audio as well as video.
