Issue

How do I update/change the language pack on my Network Management Card 2 device?

Product Line
  • Network Management Card 2 - AP9630/30CH, AP9631/31CH, AP9635/35CH
    Devices with an embedded Network Management Card 2 include (but are not limited to): 2G Metered/Switched Rack PDUs (AP84XX, AP86XX, AP88XX, AP89XX), Certain Audio/Video Network Management Enabled products.

Environment
  • All serial numbers
  • AOS version v5.1.1 or higher

Cause

As of AOS (APC Operating System) firmware release v5.1.1 for Network Management Card 2 devices (AP9630, AP9631, AP9635, mini-AP9630), APC now supports localization with a new feature called language Packs.

These devices can support localization in up to six different languages at a time (always including English). These language packs are bundled with each firmware release for Network Management Card 2 in the form of a .lpk file and are also available for download via apc.com via standalone packs.

Resolution

Below are instructions for updating/changing these language packs which can change the language of the Web Interface, Emails, event logs, syslog messages, and SNMP traps. Each recipient can also have a different preferred language for all of these notification options. Not all applications have language packs available.

Some important notes you should be aware of prior to applying a language pack update:
  • The language pack does NOT translate the Command Line Interface (CLI) environment. That will remain in English.
  • Only one language pack is supported at a time. Upon uploading a second pack, the first pack will be deleted automatically upon the network management card rebooting after the language pack upload.
  • Language packs are APP version specific - meaning if you are using the sumx application for a Smart UPS/Matrix UPS, you need to use a sumx labeled language pack for the same version number.

To upgrade a Network Management Card 2's language pack, please use one of the three methods below:
  • Network Management Card 2 Firmware Upgrade Utility
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP)/Secure CoPy (SCP)
  • USB (on supported devices only, requires bootmonitor v1.0.8 or higher)

Network Management Card 2 Firmware Upgrade Utility

When upgrading the firmware on a Network Management Card 2, the easiest method to do so is using the Network Management Card 2 Firmware Upgrade Utility seen below. Upon entering an IP address, username and password (or using the Device list for a mass firmware upgrade), the user will also have the option to apply the desired language pack option, seen below.

The .lpk file that the Firmware Upgrade Utility will use is applied from the directory from where the firmware files were initially extracted.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)/Secure CoPy (SCP)

FTP:

In order to upgrade the language pack via FTP on Windows, follow the example instructions below:
1.) Open an MSDOS prompt (in a Windows environment: Start > run > "cmd")

2.) Change directories to the directory that you have stored the language pack files in. Use the cd command to navigate to the desired folder.

3.) Type ftp<space><ip address of Network Management Card>. Press enter.

4.) Log into the Network Management Card with the Administrator login.

5.) It is necessary to change to the /lang directory on the card. To do so, type cd lang and press enter.

6.) Type bin. Press enter.

7.) Type hash. Press enter.

8.) At your command prompt, type put<space>sumx_xxx_EszhCnjaJaptBrkoKo.lpk (or whatever the desired language pack filename is. Alternatively, you can click and drag this file over the command prompt to insert the full path name.) Press enter.

9.) Type bye to terminate the FTP session with the network management card.

10.) Type bye and exit out of your MSDOS prompt.

Note: If using MacOSX, the full filepath of the destination folder will need to be included in the "put" command. An example command would read:
put /Users/Admin/Downloads/sumx_656_frFrdeDeitItesEsptBr.lpk /lang/sumx_656_frFrdeDeitItesEsptBr.lpk

SCP:

In order to upgrade the language pack via SCP, follow the example instructions below:

1.) Identify and locate the language pack described in the preceding instructions for FTP.

2.) Use an SCP command line to transfer the desired language pack to the management card. The following example uses xxx to represent the version number of the language pack and are for the sumx application:
scp<space>sumx_xxx_EszhCnjaJaptBrkoKo.lpk<space>apc@158.205.6.185:/lang/sumx_xxx_EszhCnjaJaptBrkoKo.lpk
3.) The management card will them prompt you for a password prior to transferring the desired language pack in order to complete the transfer.

*SCP has been tested with PowerChute Personal Edition on Windows. Your scp client may require different syntax but please note the language packs are stored in the /lang directory.

USB (on NMC2 devices with USB and bootmonitor v1.0.8 or higher)

1.) Refer to knowledge base article ID FA156047 for instructions on upgrading firmware via USB.

2.) Append LANG= to your upload.rcf file and place the particular pack in the same apcfirm directory with .bin files. Example:
BM=apc_hw05_bootmon_108.bin
AOS=apc_hw05_aos_621.bin
APP=apc_hw05_sumx_621.bin
LANG=sumx_621_frFrdeDeitItesEsptBr.lpk

3.) Continue with the rest of the USB upgrade procedure outlined in knowledge base article ID FA156047 to execute the upgrade. (This includes inserting the USB stick into the device and issuing a reboot in order for the device to boot off of the USB stick).
