Geo SCADA: File Download from Virtual ViewX

Geo SCADA provides users with the ability to download files (of specific file types) via Virtual ViewX from the Virtual ViewX server PC to the client PC that is running a Virtual ViewX client.

A list of supported and unsupported file types may be found in the ViewX Help under:

System Administration | Virtual ViewX System Configuration | Use Registry Settings to Enable File Downloads from Virtual ViewX | Specify which file types can be downloaded from Virtual ViewX.

This article provides the steps needed to configure this functionality.

  1. On the Virtual ViewX server PC, open the Windows Registry (type: regedit from the Windows Start button)

  1. Navigate to: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Schneider Electric\Virtual ViewX

  1. If they do not already exist, create the following two strings: DowloadFilesAllowed and DownloadFileTypes.  (Note there is an ‘s’ on the end of the word ‘Files’ in the DownloadFilesAllowed string.)

  1. Set DownloadFilesAllowed to a value of True and set DownloadFileTypes to: .txt, .pdf, .xlsx, .docx (see image below)

  2. Still on the Virtual ViewX server PC, check to ensure that the VVXLocalUser has read permissions on the folder where the file is originating from, by looking in the Windows Computer Management app:

  3. Next, go to the folder where the file (to be downloaded) originates (I.E. is saved), right-click on the folder, select ‘Properties’ and go to the ‘Security’ tab.  Check to ensure that the Users group (from above) has ‘Read’ permissions on the folder:

(For this example, a folder named ‘VVX download files’ has been created)

  4. Again, from the Virtual ViewX server PC, open ViewX.  Create a button on a mimic and configure a pick action for a hyperlink.  Point to the file (to be downloaded) from the originating folder (I.E. for this example, point to a file in the ‘VVX download files’ folder named contact_list.txt.)

  5. On the Virtual ViewX client PC, open a browser, go into the settings, and note the location where downloaded files are saved.  The screen shot below is from Microsoft Edge:

  6. Still on the Virtual ViewX client PC, open File Explorer and navigate to the download folder location (as per the screen shot above).  Right-click on the folder, select ‘Properties’ and then navigate to the ‘Security’ tab.  Ensure that the Windows user (who logged on to the PC) has ‘Write’ permissions to that folder:

  7. Launch Virtual ViewX, navigate to the mimic with the button (from ‘step 7)’ above), click on the button and the file should be downloaded to the folder location denoted in step 8) above:
