Schneider Electric and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) are co-sponsors of the documentary series, the first part of which was filmed in a Borana Herders community in northeastern Kenya. As part of the sponsorship agreement, both companies will appoint sustainability experts to join the production team on location during filming and bring their ecological and social transition expertise to the table.
The Kenya episode focuses on how the Borana herders have replaced their traditional herds of cattle with herds of camels, more resistant to extreme conditions and capable of producing milk with exceptional nutritional qualities. The Borana have employed an ingenious solution to protect their livelihoods and ensure the survival of agropastoralism in a region acutely affected by desertification. Elsewhere in the Borana Conservancy, local communities have begun using solar powered water pumps to facilitate access to the water supplies required to irrigate crops and support livestock.
Three BCG experts participated in the Kenya shoot and will continue to work alongside the Borana community in the coming months, culminating in the publication of a digital white paper on the RISE World Heritage website. Schneider Electric’s participation is inherently aligned with its “Access to Energy” program, which brings affordable renewable power solutions and education to rural and remote communities in emerging countries. One such solution is the ‘Villaya Solar Water Pump’, a fully automated system designed to provide water at affordable cost for people with limited access or no access to electricity.
“RISE is delighted to be working with BCG and Schneider Electric. The expertise gained from these institutions enables us to raise awareness on how climate change actions are affecting different regions. It also puts the focus on the solutions local communities are implementing to adapt to climate change, specifically around topics such as reforestation, pastoralism, transport & extreme events, ocean & coastal erosion, and water & agriculture”, says Nicolas Plain, CEO of RISE - Our World Heritage.
BCG will support RISE by providing insights from the extensive experience gained helping organizations and communities in their climate and sustainability journey. “BCG is proud to work alongside Schneider Electric to support the production of RISE, which enables us to share expertise and support local communities across Africa in adapting to climate change,” says Patrick Dupoux, Managing Director & Senior Partner at BCG and BCG’s Head of Africa. “RISE captures our enthusiasm towards the adoption of nature-based and technology solutions, which are critical in adapting to climate change and preserving biodiversity.”
“Schneider Electric is proud to be working with RISE. This project brings to the fore the group’s commitment to highlighting low-tech power, innovation, and community education,” says Carol Koech, General Manager for East Africa at Schneider Electric.
In addition to the shoot in Kenya, the RISE project will film in four other locations around the world - Madagascar, Peru, Bonaire and Canada, to highlight a variety of efficient and sustainable ways of preserving biodiversity and tackling climate change (adaptation and mitigation).
Filming for Part 1 of the RISE series took place in Kenya from 15 – 28 February
