Goodman New Zealand is aiming to improve the measurement and management of energy consumption across its property portfolio. It is seeking to reduce energy costs, achieve Green Star and NABERSNZ certifications and streamline its overall energy management strategy. To address these challenges, Goodman has partnered with Schneider Electric and Quasar Systems, a master Schneider EcoXpert, along with ControlCo Automation as an important implementation partner. Together the collaborators installed an EcoStruxure Solution across the Goodman portfolio, with the selected solutions being EcoStruxure Building Operation and EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert.
The challenge
- Managing and monitoring energy consumption: Goodman needed a robust system to track energy usage across its extensive property portfolio.
- Optimising energy costs and achieving certifications: The goal is to reduce energy costs while attaining Green Star building and NABERS certifications on selected buildings.
- Unified management approach: Goodman required a cloud-hosted solution that would provide a single point of access, allowing it to effectively manage all buildings from a central platform.
- Integration and product range: It required a supplier capable of seamlessly integrating with third-party devices and offering a wide range of energy management products.
The solution
Mumin Bhat, the National Business Development Manager for Ecostruxure Power at Schneider Electric, says, “Goodman chose to collaborate with Schneider Electric, EcoXperts Quasar Systems, and ControlCo Automation for its energy management solution. Schneider Electric EcoXperts proposed an end-to-end EcoStruxure Solution that addressed all of Goodman’s requirements while ensuring scalability and future-proofing.”
The results
The implementation of Schneider’s Power Management Expert solution has so far yielded positive results for Goodman:
- Green Star certification: Goodman has achieved Green Star certification on some of its new developments, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.
- Reduction in operating expenses (OPEX): With the data becoming available, Goodman is now looking to drive reduction in energy use, providing cost savings for its customers.
- Streamlined operations and improved sustainability: The unified approach provided by Schneider Electric's solution is enhancing the effectiveness of Goodman to make key business decisions, streamline operations, and contribute to a more sustainable property management approach.
What businesses can do now:
Mumin Bhat says, “Schneider Electric’s research identifies benchmarking as a common hurdle for businesses seeking to advance their energy consumption management programmes. The main sustainability benchmark systems of Green Star Rating and NABERS NZ have high awareness among businesses, but unfortunately, the accessibility isn’t there yet. Businesses perceive the barrier to entry as too high, and they get scared away before starting.
“In fact, there is an easy way to make a start. What all businesses can do now is look at incorporating power and energy meters with software for power monitoring and energy management. This gives a business an instant view of where the major energy loads are and where they can create immediate efficiencies and direct investment into the right areas.
“When it comes to incentivising and implementing change towards sustainability objectives, business leaders can’t just want to do it for ROI – they have to do it for their morals and conscience, but this is harder when businesses are struggling to measure ROI against sustainability metrics. A monitoring system gives business leaders control.”
James Campbell, Sustainability Project Manager for Goodman, says, “We decided to partner with Schneider Electric, Quasar Systems, and ControlCo as they demonstrated the expertise required to implement a comprehensive solution that has the scalability needed for our portfolio. We are looking forward to the benefits and opportunities this will provide for our customers to help them achieve their sustainability goals.”
Nigel Loraine, National Manager – Controls & Automation for ControlCo, says, “Our fully scalable solutions provide sustainably designed, energy-efficient, and well-managed properties for all organisations. Goodman has had positive results from the implementation of EcoStruxure Building Operations, which was installed over several buildings and has already identified plant running inefficiently and outside of normal hours. The PME data is currently being analysed. The intention is to roll out the Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Solution in future builds as well as existing ones.”
