Setting up Alarm Notifications with Power Monitoring Expert (v2020 and forward)

Issue
The last version of the Event Notification Module (final version 8.3.4) as a separate application with PME was in 2020. In 2020 the replacement for ENM was added as a new feature integrated into the Web Application. There are no separate databases for the ENM module.
Similarly, the Alarm Notifications and Event Notification Module (ENM) observes the data received by PME against a set of rules to determine when to send out an email or text message.
The below will cover setting up notifications in PME 2020 and forward.
Please note use of this application requires a base PME license as well as an Event Notification Module license.

Resolution

Before getting started you will need to be on PME 2020 or later and have the devices that you want to send notifications on already added to the system.
To start the setup, log into PME’s web application. Once in the Web Application:

  1. Navigate to the Settings tab
  2. From the Settings tab, in the Settings Library open the Alarms folder.
  3. From the Alarms folder, select Notifications.

Typically, an SMTP server is used to send out emails for notifications, but there is also an SMS option  (https://www.twilio.com/). This document will go through the SMTP route.  See the PME system guide for information on the SMS option.

  1. In the main window navigate to "Email settings."
  2. Here is where to set the SMTP settings. If you do not know of an SMTP server to use please contact your IT for an SMTP server address. Enter the port (typically the port used is 25 if not specified otherwise). If the SMTP server uses SSL, check the check box, and enter the credentials to the SMTP server if credentials are needed.
  3. At this time, we also want to set the "From Address" and "From Display" names to let those who get the notifications know where they are coming from.
  4. Once we have the above filled out, we should test the SMTP server to verify it can send an email. Enter your email address and hit test, then check your inbox to verify email functionality.
  5. Next select "Alarms" (the option under General, Email, SMS). Alarms will control if you want to get notified every time an alarm comes in or specify a delay. Additionally, the option group alarms together and then be notified of the event. There is also an option to customize a hybrid of the two.
  6. In the Notifications "Schedules" tab, there is an option to set up alerts to only be sent during certain times, create templates for the notification messages, add recipients, and create notification rules.
  7. For adding recipients, if you wish for a text to be sent instead of an email the email using the desired phone number and the @ will be controlled by the cell provider (ex. 1234567890@vtext.com), otherwise input the email you wish to send to.
  8. We will revisit the "Rules" tab. Note in the "General" option, you can disable notifications while they are being set up.

These notifications are sent out based on PME receiving alarms. Alarms can be configured on devices and software alarms can be created in Web Apps > Settings > Alarms > Software Alarms. Once the desired alarms are configured navigate to the Alarms tab in Web Apps.
The next step is to make an alarm view. If familiar with ENM from PME 9.0 and prior this would equate to "filters." From the alarms tab, you may need to back out of "system views" to reach the global library.

  1. Add a new alarm view by pressing the grey plus '+' symbol.
  2. Name this view and ensure Alarm history is selected for view type. Notification does not work with Alarm Status views.
  3. Next, create a filter. The options include what sources to apply the view for, priority (this is helpful for separating alarms from the same device), and lastly how the alarm is categorized. (Note the ellipsis
"…" next to categories opens subcategories to further select the events desired.)

Save the view and check the events that show to make sure these are the events you would like to receive notifications on.

Now that we have an Alarm View to use and have set up the parameters to allow PME to send out notifications via SMTP,  they can be fused together.

  1. Navigate to the Settings tab
  2. From the Settings tab, in the Settings Library open the "Alarms" folder.
  3. From the Alarms folder, select "Notifications."
  4. From here select "Recipients" and add the emails or phone numbers, that you wish to notify.
  5. Select "templates" if you would like to customize a message to be sent with the notification and add a new template.
  6. If you wish for the rule to only send out notifications for a certain time window, select "schedules" and set when you want the rule to be enabled or disabled.
  7. Now, it is time to combine everything together. Staying in the notifications section of the alarms settings under settings, go back to the Rules sub-tab.
  8. From Rules, select the "Add Notification" Rule.
  9. From the pop-up window select the view to be used. If the view is not found, there is a "show advanced" option under the search. If the view was just created logging out and back in may be required.
  10. Select the alarm view to use for this rule. Then click Next.
  11. Select or add the recipients who will be notified.
  12. Then select or add the schedule to use. This is optional. No 24/7 schedule has to be created if a schedule is not desired.
  13. Then select or add a template and name the rule.
  14. On this last screen, note the test options. To see how the notification will look select the test button to send out a notification to all recipients selected.
  15. There are sliders to choose between email and SMS. (note if you are emailing a phone number ex. 1234567890@vtext.com this would still be an email. SMS would only be if going through Twilio or another SMS service)
  16. The send-on activity slider will send notifications when an alarm in the view becomes active or goes inactive. Also, if the alarm happens repeatedly this will notify of all instances not just the first.
  17. Review your selections then select finish to finish.
  18. Once the rule is created it is active and should start sending notifications out. To temporarily stop the rule, it can be disabled from this same section.
