Migrating custom / saved reports from an ION-E 6.0 system into SPM 7.0 when using the SBS upgrade utility

When migrating from an ION Enterprise 6.0 / SP1 system into a new StruxureWare Power Monitoring 7.0 install (as described in RESL207604 "Side-By-Side Upgrade Guide"), special care has to be taken to migrate custom reports & report packs to the new system, and preserve any saved reports from the old 6.0 system.
Case 1 (recommended): SBS tool has backed up the old 6.0 / SP1 system, but not yet restored onto the new 7.0 system

This is the recommended workflow for migrating your 6.0 /SP1 reports onto the new 7.0 system. The starting point for this procedure assumes that you have used the SBS upgrade utility to create a backup package of the old 6.0 SP1 system, still have access to the report packs on the old system, and have not yet restored the package onto the new 7.0 system. (i.e. it's still a "fresh" install.)

  1. Take the custom report packs from the old server, and upgrade them to the new 7.0 format with the tool found in RESL206569 ("Error while installing Report Packs from previous versions ").
  2. Place the upgraded report packs in the new 7.0 system's \ION Enterprise\web\ReportPacks folder.
  3. Upload them into Web Reporter using either the usual Web interface or the command-line utility.
  4. Restore the old 6.0 backup package onto the new 7.0 system with the SBS utility.

You should now have all your custom reports loaded onto your new SPM 7.0 system, and all saved reports will be fully functional.

Case 2: SBS tool has already been used to restore onto the new 7.0 system

If you have already restored your 6.0 / SP1 backup package onto the new 7.0 system using the SBS utility, you will see all your custom & saved reports in Web Reporter, but they will not function. When you try to run them, you get the "endlessly spinning green circle" and an exception in the System Log similar to:
    • System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException:
The item '/ION Reports/ION Report Packs/MyCustomReportPack/Tabular Report_custom' cannot be found.

      ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ItemNotFoundException:
The item '/ION Reports/ION Report Packs/MyCustomReportPack/Tabular Report_custom' cannot be found.
You will need to perform a slightly more complicated recovery procedure to get your custom & saved reports working again. Read the whole procedure before starting to ensure you understand the process.

3. Run the following script in SQL Studio:

BackupAndDeleteFromReportTables.sql

This will backup all your saved report information (to a temporary table), and delete them from the ION_Network database.

4. Upload your updated custom report packs (from steps 1 & 2) and all your custom RDL files into Web Reporter using either the usual Web interface or the command-line utility.

5. Restore the saved report information (from step 3) into the ION_Network database by running the following script in SQL Studio:

RestoreReportTables.sql

You should now have all your custom reports loaded onto your new SPM 7.0 system, and all saved reports will be fully functional.
