Singapore, 20 June 2024 - Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced a first-of-a-kind collaboration with Singapore-based wastewater treatment specialist, MattenPlant, to incubate technology in Singapore to improve the sustainability and future resilience of the nation’s municipal water supply and, ultimately, for urban centres in tropical regions around the world.
With Singapore's water demand at 440 million gallons daily and expected to double by 2065, improving system efficiency is crucial for ensuring water security and climate resilience.
Under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two companies will bring together their local and global expertise in automation and water treatment to jointly identify, assess, and develop disruptive technologies to more efficiently treat and recycle municipal wastewater that are fit for purpose in tropical climates. The co-operation will also explore the implications for improving future industrial wastewater treatment, a process that currently requires significant energy consumption and produces high carbon emissions. Energy costs can account for up to 40% of total operation expenses in treatment plants.
A vital area of collaboration will be the integration of Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technology, a novel method of treating municipal wastewater due to its energy efficiency, smaller footprint and resource recovery potential, with Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Automation Expert (EAE), creating a single, digital platform for wastewater data curation, management, tracking and insights. EcoStruxure Automation Expert enables real-time data exchange between operational systems, improving plant efficiency across all areas, including design and construction, plant operations, and on-going maintenance.
The success of this collaboration would enable both companies to leverage their global reach and platforms to export their learnings and technology worldwide.

The collaboration will also aid local organisations in meeting new industrial water treatment requirements, from Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB), aimed at enhancing water efficiency and sustainability in industries like Electronics and Biomedical. The new requirements will help Singapore achieve water savings of 9 million gallons daily from 2035, equivalent to 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
