Connecting Meter Directly to Computer via a RJ-45 Ethernet Cable

Resolution
This article outlines the procedure for connecting a PowerLogic Meter directly to a computer via an ethernet cable. A Straight-Through or cross-over ethernet cable is required for this task.

1. Obtain an RJ-45 Ethernet cable
2. Connect one end of the cable to the meter and the other to the computer
3. Assign an IP address and Subnet Mask to the meter (see Example below) ignoring the gateway settings
4. Assign an IP address and Subnet Mask to the computer :

  • Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings
  • Right-Click on the Local Area Connection and choose Properties
  • Scroll down and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) and click Properties
  • Use the screenshot and information shown below as a reference to assign IP address and subnet masks to the computer and meter


Static IP Settings
  • Enter an IP Address and Subnet Mask. Assign the same subnet mask as on the meter and ensure the IP Address is on the same subnet as the meter (See Example below)
  • Example of IP assignment :
    Meter:
    IP Address: 10.168.68.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    Computer
    IP Address: 10.168.68.10
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Save the Local area connection properties by clicking ok

5. Test comms by pinging the meter for a response in the Command Prompt (CMD)
6. Use ION Setup, Power Monitoring expert or Modbus Tester to connect to meter.
