Why is my Share-UPS is sending a low battery signal to the attached devices?

Issue

My Share-UPS is sending a low battery signal to the attached devices.

Product Line

Share-UPS - AP9207

Environment

• All firmware versions
• Specific configurations listed below

Cause

There are several reasons why the Share-UPS could force a low battery signal to the attached servers even though the UPS does not have a low battery. See below for a resolution.

Resolution

Refer to the possible causes and resolutions listed below.

What serial cables are being used by the Share-UPS?
The server attached to the advanced port should be connected to the Share-UPS using a black cable with part number 940-0024 or 940-1524. The remaining servers should be attached to the Share-UPS using a gray cable with part number 940-0020. PowerChute Plus or Powerchute Business Edition on these ports with a UNIX based system would require the 940-0023A cable. If any other cable is used, a low battery or on battery signal will be generated.
What mode is the Share-UPS in?

The dip switches on the front of the Share-UPS determine which shutdown mode the device will use. The three modes are Confirmed, Timer, or Low Battery. Use the position of the dip switches and the table located on the top of the Share-UPS to determine which mode the Share-UPS is in.
If the Share-UPS is using Confirmed Mode a low battery signal is sent when:
  • The UPS reaches a low battery condition.
  • A user logged into the management port of the Share-UPS and commanded it to shutdown the load.
  • The UPS went to battery and forced the Smart Signaling server to shutdown.
  • Once the Smart Signaling server is shutdown, the Share-UPS forces a low battery signal to all the attached servers.
If the Share-UPS is in Timer mode a low battery signal is sent when:
  • The UPS reaches a low battery condition.
  • The timer being used by the Timer Mode expired (See the Share-UPS User's Manual for more details).
  • A user logged into the management port of the Share-UPS and commanded it to shutdown the load.
  • The UPS went to battery and forced the Smart Signaling server to shutdown. Once the Smart Signaling server is shutdown, the Share-UPS forces a low battery signal to all the attached servers.
If the Share-UPS is configured for Low Battery Mode than a low battery signal is sent when:
  • The UPS reaches a low battery condition.
  • A user logged into the management port of the Share-UPS and commanded it to shutdown the load.
  • The UPS went to battery and forced the Smart Signaling server to shutdown. Once the Smart Signaling server is shutdown, the Share-UPS forces a low battery signal to all the attached servers.
