Report Manager error: The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version.

When trying to access http://localhost/Reports_ION, the Report Manager will open but will give the error:
The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version.

To correct this error, navigate to the RSWebApplication.config file, which is located by default in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\ReportManager\RSWebApplication.config

Open the file for edit and locate the 'ReportServer' tag. The full URL needs to be added to this tag, usually 'http://localhost/ReportServer_ION'. Once that tag is added, remove the 'ReportServer' value from the tag 'ReportServerVirtualDirectory'. The file should appear like this when the changes have been made:

After the file is updated, save it and then recycle the Application Pool that the Report Manager is using. Recycling the Application Pool will force the configuration files to be reloaded into IIS.
