US and Canadian Heavy Duty Safety Switches
Resolution:
Below are the main differences for the heavy duty safety switches ONLY:
1) The first main difference are the catalog numbers. The CSA approved, for use ONLY in Canada, will contain a prefix 'C' of the catalog number. For example, the CHU365 or CH365, which indicates the switch is CSA approved and NOT UL listed.
NOTE: Please see the Canadian Digest for all the appropriate catalog numbers for use in Canada and all the appropriate CSA approved accessories.
2) The UL listed, for use ONLY in the US, will contain a prefix 'H' of the catalog number, without a 'C'. For example, the HU365 or H365, which indicates the switch is UL listed and NOT CSA approved.
NOTE: Please see the US Digest for all the appropriate catalog numbers for use in the US and all the appropriate UL listed accessories.
3) The labeling on the switch will only contain the manifest for which the switch is approved or listed, so the CSA manifest on the labeling of the Canadian catalog numbers and the UL manifest on the labeling of the US catalog numbers.
NOTE: Some of the Canadian switch labeling may contain a cUL listed manifest instead of the CSA manifest.
4) All CSA approved, fusible switches that are suitable for use as service equipment MUST contain a factory installed and factory bonded solid neutral assembly.
Exception: The 1200 A used on 480Y/277 Vac or 600Y/347 Vac grounded wye systems are NOT suitable for use as service equipment per the CEC.
NOTE: The CSA approved non-fusible switches are NOT suitable for use as service equipment in Canada.
6) ALL the US, UL Listed, fusible and non-fusible switches that are suitable for use as service equipment will require the installer to follow the NEC code by having the appropriate solid neutral or service ground field installed and field bonded.
NOTE: The US, UL listed switches do NOT come bonded from the factory.
