Issue:
Will inductive proximity switches work on aluminum?
Product Line:
Schneider Electric prox sensors sold and supported in the USA.
Environment:
Installation
Cause:
Application
Resolution:
Yes but the range is decreased using aluminum, usually achieving about 40% of the rated range using a standard target made of ASTM A36 mild steel. The one exception is aluminum foil [<0.1 mm] which makes an excellent target. This is due to an obscure principal known as the ``skin effect``. Other possibilities include the XS....KPM40 universal series which detect all metals at the same range and the XS1M18PAS20(D) which are specific for non-ferrous metals.
