What is the difference between the legacy Micrologic and new IFE/IFM module circuit breaker communication configuration?
Issue
Determining the correct Micrologic circuit breaker communications configuration for monitoring and/or control software.

Cause
Selecting the incorrect driver can cause communication problems with monitoring and control software.
Resolution
For the trip units in the table above, the legacy configuration uses a RS-485 connection to the Breaker Communication Module (BCM) or the optional Cradle Communication Module (CCM) which then connects to the BCM. The wiring can be either 2-wire or 4-wire depending on firmware revision. The figure below shows the available configuration.
Notes:
The new configuration employs IFM and/or IFE modules. The IFM is communication module than communicates serially thru a RJ-45 connected “ULP” cord. The IFM communicates serially to an Ethernet gateway and other devices on a serial RS-485 daisy chain (2-wire), and the module auto detects the baud rate and parity of the daisy chain. The rotary switches set slave ID and lock or unlock the write commands to the connected device.
The IFE module is an Ethernet enabled device. The standard version is made for one breaker connecting using a ULP cord. The gateway version also connects to other breakers through a series of stacked IFM modules. The module has a device website that allows the configuration of connect breakers. The figure below represents the wiring of the new configuration.

- The EGX100 represents a standard Modbus TCP/IP gateway using the port 502.
- The CCM is an optional device and the BCM can be directly connected to the gateway device.
- The A marked configurations has the trip unit set to 4-wire which can be seen in the top left of the figure. The BCM can auto detect a 4-wire or 2-wire configuration.
- The B marked configurations has the trip unit set to 2-wire ULP. ULP is a Schneider Electric proprietary protocol.

Note:
- The I/O module is the replacement of the CCM. Like its predecessor, the I/O module is optional and it can be directly connected to the IFE/IFM module.
- The circuit breaker must be set to “2 Wire, ULP” in the communication parameters of the Micrologic trip unit. This setting is the default on newly installed unless preconfigured for a particular application.
