What is Matter?

Every day our homes are getting smarter with connected sensors, locks, thermostats, and light switches and outlets. But it’s not easy connecting new smart devices that require multiple apps from different brands. Now you can take the guesswork out of your purchasing process and use a single app with Matter.

Matter allows your smart devices to communicate with each other. It’s the Internet of Things (IoT) communication standard created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, whose members include Amazon, Apple, Google, and Schneider Electric. Now with Matter, certified devices from different brands can talk to each other and work together seamlessly across Matter-compatible platforms using just one app.

What do I need for using a Matter device?

Matter-compatible device: If the device has the Matter badge on it, you will be able to connect it to any Matter compatible ecosystem.

Matter-compatible app: A Matter compatible app is used to connect the Matter device to a Matter hub/controller during the onboarding process.

Matter controller hub: The Matter controller will be the hub responsible for controlling the Matter device after it is onboarded. A matter controller hub is not needed if you commission the Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices through the Schneider Home App.

What app do I use with my device?

You can use any of the apps from ecosystems that support matter such as:

  • Schneider Home app (Andorid/iOS)
  • Apple HomeKit app on devices running iOS 16.1 or newer.
  • Samsung SmartThings app (Android / iOS)
  • Google Home app (Android / iOS)
  • Amazon Alexa app (Android / iOS)
  • Home Assistant (Android / iOS)
  • And more…

What is the Matter firmware/software requirements for each platform?

Apple: To set up HomePod, you need an iPhone or iPad. Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. To set up your HomePod (2nd generation), you need an iPhone with iOS 16.3 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 16.3 or later.

Google: You need a Google Account, an Android phone or tablet with Android 8.1 or later and with Google Play services version 22.48.14; Or an iPhone/iPad with iOS 16.5 or later Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 4.2 or higher.

Latest version of the Google Home app from the Play Store or App Store.

Amazon Alexa: Alexa app version: 2.2.491118.0 or later and up to date firmware for the supported Matter hub.

Samsung SmartThings: you will need an Android device running SmartThings App version 1.7.91 or higher. iOS device running iOS 16.2 or higher and SmartThings App version 1.6.94 or higher. If you're using a Samsung SmartThings Matter controller listed above, it will need a firmware version 45.9 or higher and match the models listed.

What if I don’t have any of the Matter ecosystems? Can I still use these devices and what app do I use?

Matter requires a platform for the commissioning of the devices. In case you don’t have a Matter-compatible Hub/ecosystem you can commission the devices through the Schneider Home App.

Schneider Home allows you to control your devices with your phone without the need of a Matter-compatible Hub/ecosystem. This app will also allow you to keep a track of your energy consumption and costs.

What happens if my hub gets disconnected from internet but still has local Wi-Fi connectivity?

In case the hub does not have internet connectivity, depending on the ecosystem, you might lose some features such as commissioning of new devices and the use of voice commands, but the devices will still be controllable and perform all the automations.

Is an internet connection needed for my Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices to work?.

Yes, but only for the initial commissioning. Once devices are commissioned, internet connectivity is not needed for Matter devices to work as long as there is a Wi-Fi network in the house and your devices, Matter controller are in the same wireless network. This is one of the main benefits of Matter, as is the ability to use the devices in a local network. However, when trying to control the devices remotely (outside your home network) an internet connection is required to communicate with the devices.

Will my Matter-compatible Schneider X Series products work with Matter devices from other brands?

Matter is a standard that allows the interconnectivity between brands. Now with Matter, certified devices from different brands can talk to each other and work together seamlessly across Matter-compatible platforms using just one app.

Some examples of the apps that allow this are: Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Amazon Alexa. This feature is not supported if you use Schneider Home.

Are my current Schneider X Series Wi-Fi devices compatible with Matter?

No, your current Schneider X Series Wi-Fi devices are not compatible with Matter.

Is there a limit of devices that I can connect to my network?

The limit is determined by the Matter-compatible hub/controller. Some hubs allow a maximum of 6 Matter devices, while some support much more. It is recommended to select a hub according to your needs.

How safe is Matter from a cybersecurity perspective?

Your smart device data and user information is private and secure thanks to multiple layers of encryption.

Can I share my device from one ecosystem to the other?

Multi-admin is a key part of the Matter specification and allows a device in one ecosystem to be shared with and controlled by another. Let’s say a user has an Amazon Echo, a HomePod mini and a Google Nest Thermostat. If the user buys a device that supports Matter, the user can add the device to both the Alexa and HomeKit ecosystems and even to Google Home. The user could use any of these ecosystems to control the device, and the status will be synchronized in all ecosystems.

You need to first commission your device to a Matter ecosystem. You can then generate a QR code to add the same Matter device to another Matter ecosystem.

Is Matter similar to Zigbee?

No. Zigbee and Matter are two different communication standards focused on smart home devices.

How to reset my Matter-compatible Schneider X Series device?

A reset can be done when the device is powered;

  • Long press (T > 10s) on both up and down buttons for switch and dimmer.
  • Long press (T > 10s) on the reset button for Receptacle and plug.

Once reset, Green LED flashes in 2Hz (ON-time 250ms, OFF-time 250ms), and the device comes back to the commissioning mode which lasts for 30s.

Do I need a neutral cable for Matter-compatible Schneider X Series device?

Yes. All Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices require a neutral wire.

Are my Matter devices compatible with my home?

To ensure you have the best experience with your Matter devices, the following compatibility specifications are recommended:

  • A consistent 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi connection. The Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices are not compatible with 5Ghz Wi-Fi signals.
  • Your mobile device runs on iOS or Android and has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

What will happen if a Matter hub/controller is removed from the App?

Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices will be removed from the corresponding App after removal of the corresponding Matter Hub/Controller from the App. However, there is no impact on devices commissioned or shared in other Apps/ecosystems using the multi-admin feature.

How to connect the Matter-compatible Schneider X Series Matter Devices, if I change my Wi-Fi network name or password or I change my router?

Factory reset and Recommission the Device.

Will Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices connect to a 5GHz network?

Matter compatible Schneider X Series devices only support 2.4 GHz network.

Why does my Matter-compatible Schneider X Series devices show "No Response"?"
  • This may be due to either network interference or network congestion or loss of internet,
  • Please ensure you are running 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. In case you are using dual-band routers ensure both the networks have different SSID or switch off the 5GHz band
  • Make sure the number of Wi-Fi connected devices are within wireless network range of your router.
  • Reconnect your smart device to Wi-Fi, and make sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong enough.
  • Wait until the network is fixed if your router performs poorly in wireless networks that might result from network congestion.
  • Restart your Matter-compatible Schneider X Series device.

What should I do if my Matter-compatible Schneider X Series device is offline?
  • Ensure, the Wi-Fi network is working normally. If there are no problems with the network, reset the device and then check if it is reconnected.
  • If the problem persists, factory reset and add the device. Get the Wi-Fi router closer or add a Wi-Fi repeater near to the device.
