How can we help you today?
Adding a new DD to your TREX

Before getting started make sure that you have Upgrade Studio installed on your laptop and that you have an account to log in.  You also must have already activated your TREX communicator.

  1. Go to Schneider Electric website (www.se.com) or the FieldComm Group website (https://www.fieldcommgroup.org/registered-products/table?manufacturer=Schneider%20Electric) and search for the DD (Device Description) of the instrument you need to communicate with.
  2. Download the DD (Device Description) .zip file AND EXTRACT IT to a local folder in your computer.
  3. Connect your TREX machine to your laptop using a micro-USB cable, provided with the TREX unit.  The micro-USB port in the TREX is located on the upper part of the device.

4. Open Upgrade Studio and log in to your Emerson Account.

5. Click on More > Import Device Description > Browse DD Files, and select the files within the unzipped folder (the folder should have a .fm8 and a .sym file to have a complete DD).

6. Click Open

7. Select Manufacturer code. Foxboro (Schneider Electric) is 000014.

8. Copy Device Description, Device, and DD Revision into Import Fields based on the vendor website information. All fields must have a value in order to proceed.   If the data is not brought automatically when adding the DD files into the Import Device Description window, check for the Registered Product Details in the Field Comm group website, or open either the .im8 file or the .ddinstal in the unzipped DD folder to search for this data. You can use Notepad to open an .im8 file, but make sure to UNCHECK the checkbox that reads “always use this app to open .im8 files”:

Open file window

Once you open the .im8 file, look for the device_type. The second column will indicate the manufacturer code, and the third column the instrument’s code. The instrument’s code is always a 4-digit number.  As an example, the instrument’s code in the .im8 below is 0003:

Instrument's code

In this second example, the instrument’s code is instead 1403:

Instrument's code -example 2

9. Click Import Device Description.

10. Click on Install Updates

Install updates tab

11. Click on Install All.
