ION Enterprise: What is the maximum number of modules in the VIP? What is the maximum number of VIPs?

Goals and Symptoms

Customer (a system integrator) wishes to know:

(a) what is the maximum number of modules in the VIP?

(b) how many VIPs could be added to an ION Enterprise server in IONE5.6 SP2 and IONE6.0?

Causes and Fixes

Answers:

(a) The limiting factor is more based on the size of the vip files (i.e. vip.cfg and vip.bak files) rather than hard number limits on modules. The vip.cfg and .bak files should max at around 2 Mbytes in size. The sliding window demand and setpoint modules are fairly light weight from a CPU point of view so the issue becomes communication settings are far as system performance is concerned.

(b) Historically, the general consensus on the maximum number of VIPs recommended in ION Enterprise is 30 although this is not a hard number and it is possible that has been increased substantially with modern operating systems and hardware platform resources. The number on the maximum number of VIPs used to be based on an operating system limit of the number of services of the same type. Many years ago (Windows 2000) this limit was 15-20.
