Cause
Microsoft Windows writes some keys to the registry and occasionally those keys are not deleted successfully following a reboot.

Resolution
*Warning: This article contains information about editing the registry. Improper changes to the registry can permanently damage the operating system. Always backup the registry before making any changes.*

Locate and delete the following entries, where applicable, from the Windows registry:

1a. 64-bit system
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\RebootPending

1b. 32-bit system
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\RebootPending

OR

2a. 64-bit system
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

2b. 32-bit system
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

OR

3. 32 or 64-bit systems
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Check for a value with the name 'PendingFileRenameOperations" and delete it if it exists.

Once you have deleted any of the above entries in the registry you should be able to reboot the server and perform the software install.
