Issue
User would like to add more OPC tags to an existing OPC device driver in Power Monitoring Expert (PME) using the Modbus Device Importer (MDI)
Product
Power Monitoring Expert 7.2.x, 8.x
Environment
Text Editor and MDI
Cause
The MDI cannot read the driver .xml file once the OPC tag information is added
Resolution
*Warning: Take backups of any files prior to modifying them. Ensure the backups are in a location that will not be overwritten (i.e. the Desktop).
This solution will only work if a backup of the .xml file is saved before modifying existing .xml file to add OPC information. See FA209993 on how to create an OPC device driver.
For the example below, the driver name and file names are OPCDevice, modify instructions to fit the name of the intended driver name and file names. The files in question are likely located in [PME install folder]\config\translators
1) Rename the existing OPCDevice.xml file to OPCDevice_OPC.xml.
2) Rename the backup .xml file to OPCDevice.xml.
3) Open the MDI (Management Console -> Tools -> System -> Modbus Device Importer).
4) Open the OPC Device Driver .ion file.
5) Edit the driver to add desired measurements.
6) Save the changes and close MDI.
7) Open the OPCdevice.xml file with a text editor and copy the information for the new measurements to the clipboard or to a blank document.
8) Close the text editor and rename OPCDevice.xml to OPCDevice_MDI.xml.
9) Open OPCDevice_OPC.xml with a text editor and paste the contents copied in step 7.
10) Modify the contents to allow OPC communications. See FA209993 for example on file content.
11) Save the file as OPCDevice.xml
12) Allow the system 10 minutes to detect the changes and confirm user is able to now access the new measurements.
Note for PME 9.0 and later, Device type editor can be used to create and modify OPC device drivers.
