In the heart of India’s Jharkhand state, the villages of Sehal and Chatti in Gumla district have embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainable development. Through a strategic collaboration between Schneider Electric and the NGO PRADAN, the Climate Smart Village initiative is redefining rural livelihoods by integrating renewable energy solutions into the fabric of daily life.

Reductions in annual carbon emission

Increase in annual family income leading to less emigration

Increase in women’s community involvement & economic independence

Bridging the energy divide

Access to reliable electricity has long been a challenge for many rural communities in India, hindering progress in essential sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare.

Traditional dependence on diesel-powered equipment not only imposed financial burdens but also contributed to environmental degradation. Recognizing these challenges, Schneider Electric introduced an innovative Climate Smart Village Solution in Sehal and Chatti. This system features 40 kW and 45 kW solar arrays equipped with IoT-enabled smart power management, ensuring optimal utilization by dynamically allocating energy based on real-time demand. This approach has empowered 110 families with consistent and sustainable energy access.

Catalyzing socio-economic growth

The infusion of renewable energy has had a profound impact on the agricultural practices of these villages. Farmers now have the capability to operate irrigation pumps, oil expellers, rice hullers, and other agro-processing equipment efficiently. This advancement has facilitated the cultivation of multiple crop cycles, including cash crops like mustard and groundnut, leading to a remarkable doubling of household incomes over four years. Moreover, the initiative has significantly reduced seasonal migration, as residents find sustainable employment within their communities.

Advancing inclusive leadership in agriculture

A standout feature of the initiative is its focus on gender inclusivity. The establishment of the Ghaghra Women Farmers Producers Organization has provided women with leadership opportunities in agricultural production and value-added processing. This advancement has not only elevated their economic status but also fostered a sense of agency and community involvement.

Environmental stewardship

Transitioning to solar energy has yielded significant environmental benefits. The villages have achieved an annual reduction of 60,000 kg in carbon emissions by replacing diesel-powered systems with clean energy solutions. This shift underscores the community's commitment to environmental sustainability and positions them as a model for eco-friendly rural development.

Scalability and future prospects

The success of the Climate Smart Village initiative in Sehal and Chatti serves as a scalable model for other rural regions. By demonstrating the tangible benefits of integrating renewable energy into community development, Schneider Electric and PRADAN have laid the groundwork for broader implementation across India and beyond. This initiative exemplifies how strategic partnerships and innovative solutions can drive sustainable progress, fostering resilient and empowered communities.

In essence, the Climate Smart Village initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of renewable energy in rural settings, illuminating pathways to sustainable development and inclusive growth. Watch this inspiring story of innovation reshaping rural India.
