The true potential of distributed energy generation is massive. This study shows how it will contribute to reshaping the global energy system.
Current energy transition forecasts generally don’t consider distributed energy generation, such as rooftop solar panels and wind turbines, to be a major game changer in the world’s transition to a net-zero future.
But this study from the Schneider Electric
It finds that customer-sited solar photovoltaic energy currently accounts for one-third of global electricity demand. But as the economic case for its use – both in new constructions and existing assets – continues to improve, its adoption will inevitably speed up, trebling to 25,000TWh by 2050.
Entitled “The unexpected disruption: distributed generation”, the report outlines the drivers behind this shift in two scenario models, offers advice on how to remove existing policy roadblocks, and sheds light on the as-yet-underestimated role that solar energy generation will play in reshaping the world’s energy system.
