Overview

While the U.S. climate action is in full swing, current plans mostly emphasize the decarbonization of buildings and transportation.
In this report, we explore industry processes in detail leveraging datasets from the Energy Information Administration.
A golden opportunity exists to accelerate industry decarbonization via electrification, and its potential lies in technical feasibility and practicality.

Our findings

  • 60% of final energy demand in industry

could be decarbonized rapidly with current technologies available at scale.

  • Electricity growing to half of total energy in the sector

The share of electricity in final energy mix of industry could climb from 30% to 45% (on the scope covered), or a 50% increase.

  • 25% reduction in fossil fuel demand

This would translate in 100MtCO2 per year, and a 25% reduction in fossil fuel demand.
