Buildings are a big part of our lives- it’s where we live, where we work, and where we spend most of our time. In fact, we spend 90% of our time indoors, in buildings. To date, the Smart Building movement has focused on energy efficiency, sustainability, and other environmental factors when it comes to creating and retrofitting buildings. But, there is a key area that has been overlooked- and that is the people in the buildings.
Here are some numbers to consider:
• 90% of a building’s costs come from the people inside the buildings
• There is a 10% drop in employee performance workplace with poor air quality and too-warm temperatures
• Attracting and retaining talent is critical as it will cost 33% of a person’s annual salary to replace them
• 40% of the service workforce will retire by 2020
Today, there is a tremendous opportunity to improve people’s experiences in buildings while increasing productivity and protecting one of our biggest building investments - our people. This also includes how customers are keeping an eye on their comfort score indexes as well as their energy savings and returns.
